Please also contact your major department to find out who your advisor is. Meeting with your Honors advisor does NOT replace or substitute for meeting with your college/ departmental advisor! Dr. Wheeler is responding to emails for general questions. Students can schedule a meeting with Dr. Leslie Sargent Jones or Dr. Angela Mead only to have an Honors audit to check their Honors progress. Explore the World of Nonprofits and Sustainable Development Initiatives through a Short-Term Service Trip!
Are you interested in the ethical treatment of animals, urban farming, or learning about how to fight mountaintop removal with jobs in renewable energy? Alternative Spring Break is the perfect way to see these projects in action and to make connections with communities across the country through service.
The ACT Office still has spots on the following trips:
Horse Creek Wildlife Sanctuary and Animal Refuge - Savannah, TN (2 spots)
With over 2,000 acres devoted to the safety and security of wildlife native to the area, it provides medical care for and houses abandoned and abused domestic animals and seeks good, caring homes for them.
Woodstock Farm Sanctuary - Woodstock, NY (2 spots)
WFAS is driven by the simple philosophy that kindness and respect to animals is our moral duty and that all the creatures that share this earth are here with us and not for us. Like our faithful dogs and lap-sitting cats, farm animals are feeling individuals who deserve to be treated with compassion and to live free of fear and suffering.
Jones Valley Urban Farm - Birmingham, AL (4 spots)
Jones Valley Urban Farm (JVUF) has successfully transformed over 3 acres of vacant downtown property into an urban teaching farm. We will be helping the community learn about sustainable agriculture and nutrition through experiential education.
The JOBS Project - Williamson, WV (5 spots)
The JOBS Project serves the dedicated communities of Central Appalachia - the families who've provided energy for generations - by increasing opportunities for local ownership, employment, and education in renewable energy. We invite citizens and local governments to explore the benefits of renewable energy development in communities throughout the region.
180 Degree Farm - Sharpsburg, GA (7 spots)
We started farming because we wanted to produce for the local community healthy, organic, "clean" foods that did not contain pesticides, herbicides, hormones or antibiotics. We also feel led to give a helping hand to those in need. We believe in giving fresh grown food to the local food ministry, but more importantly, teaching through our workshops how to grow food, on any plot of land.
If you are interested, please register ASAP! All trips are $220 which includes transportation, food, lodging, and program expenses. For more information call the ACT Office at 262-2193, or stop by the office on the 2nd floor of the Student Union by McAllister's.

UNIVERSITY EVENT
OFFICE OF MULTICULTURAL STUDENT DEVELOPMENT
A TUSKEGEE AIRMAN: BEYOND RED TAILS
SHATTERING THE RACE BARRIER
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 16TH
114 BELK LIBRARY, 7PM
FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC
The members of the 332d Fighter Group and the 99th, 100th, 301st, and 302d Fighter Squadrons during World War II are remembered in part because they were the only African-American pilots who served in combat with the Army Air Forces during World War II. Because they trained at Tuskegee Army Air Field before and during the war, they are sometimes called the Tuskegee Airmen. In challenging many of the oppressive legal and social practices of the time, the Tuskegee Airmen proved that they were equal to the other fighter pilots with whom they served heroically during World War II. Their exemplary performance opened the door for the racial integration of the military services, beginning with the Air Force, and contributed ultimately to the end of some of the institutionalized racial segregation in the United States.
Captain Harvey R. Alexander was a pilot in the 617th Squadron, 477th Bombardment Group Medium and was commissioned and trained at Tuskegee, as were 966 other African Americans. After his discharge, he earned a bachelor’s degree from the College of Commerce at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, and a master’s degree from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. He became a professor, teaching accounting at Southern University in Baton Rouge, La., and at NC A&T. For 21 years, he served as the chief business and financial officer at several institutions, including NC A&T.
