2018 Morgan Science Lecture Series - Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2018

Please join us for the 2018 Morgan Science Lecture Series on Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2018. The Morgan Lecture Committee and the College of Arts & Sciences is pleased to welcome Dr. Geraldine Richmond (University of Oregon) to campus. She will present two talks. The first talk, “Mulling Over Emulsions Molecular Bonding and Adsorption at Oil-Water Interfaces” is a technical talk that addresses interactions that take place between oil and water important for addressing environmental consequences such as oil spills. This will take place in GWH 112 at 2 p.m.

In addition, Dr. Richmond will give a public lecture, “Empowering Global Scientific Engagement” on Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2018 at 6 p.m. in the Plemmons Student Union Parkway Ballroom. Her lecture will share stories of international scientific collaborations and the use of a collective body of scientists and engineers to address developing world challenges such as access to sustainable food, drinking water and energy in environmentally friendly ways. A reception will take place prior to the lecture in the Plemmons Student Union Solarium at 5 p.m. All are welcome to attend.

Dr. Richmond is a physical chemist and a recent recipient of the Priestley Medal, the highest honor given to a scientist by the American Chemical Society. She received her undergraduate degree in chemistry from Kansas State University and her Ph.D. in physical chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley.

Her research examines the chemistry and physics that occurs at complex surfaces that have relevance to important problems in energy production, environmental remediation and atmospheric chemistry. Using a combination of laser-based experimental methods and theoretical simulations, she focuses on understanding environmentally important processes at water surfaces. Over 200 publications have resulted from the studies conducted in her laboratory with undergraduate, graduate students and postdoctoral associates.
