Curatorial Internship – Appalachia Now!
Academic standing: Current graduate or post-graduate student preferred; recent graduates or advanced undergraduates will also be considered
Major(s) or interest(s): American/Appalachian history, art history, craft studies, new media studies, studio art, theatre, or related field.
Purpose: To assist Museum staff with Appalachia Now, an interdisciplinary survey of contemporary artistic production in southern Appalachia. This juried exhibition will be one of the two major installations in the new Asheville Art Museum, opening in spring 2019.
Essential functions: This intern will gain experience in exhibition management, museum education, development, and marketing/public relations by contributing to a variety of aspects of Appalachia Now, including:
- · Assist curatorial staff with art handling/installation; editing (catalogue, registry, wall text, object labels); maintaining timelines; and assisting with documentation of the exhibition.
- · Assist education staff with developing/implementing programs related to the exhibition (e.g. artist talks, classes/workshops, performances); and researching/presenting a gallery talk or other public program.
- · Assist development staff with tracking exhibition budgets/grants awards; and raising funds for the exhibition/related events.
- · Assist communications staff with social-media pushes; and drafting/editing press information.
The ideal candidate will have prior experience working with artists in a gallery, theatre, or museum setting, and a passion for Western North Carolina and the southern Appalachian region. The intern will be introduced to issues related to contemporary art history, and develop administrative and curatorial skills in organizing art exhibitions.
Schedule: 8-10 hours per week × 10-12 weeks = 100 hours, February – May 2019; schedule TBD with staff (some evening and weekend hours expected for programs)
Work station: Asheville Art Museum Curatorial Center intern/volunteer computers; offsite if needed
