Doesn’t it sound fantastic right now to gather around a table to eat a simple, local meal together? Want to share ideas and get inspiration from others about the future of our food system? Great! App State Community FEaST (Food Engagement and Storytelling) 2020 is going virtual! Join us Thursday, November 12 at 5:30pm (EST) at the Zoom-table to hear from food system visionaries, share your ideas about re-localizing our food system and enjoy a virtual community meal!
Community FEaST is organized by AppalFRESH (Appalachian Food Research for Equity, Sustainability and Health), a trans-disciplinary collaborative of faculty and staff on Appalachian State University’s campus that are committed to supporting sustainable food systems through teaching, research and community engagement. Over the past 3 years, we have set a 100-yard-long table down the middle of campus and asked students, faculty, staff, administrators and community members to join us. As much as we would LOVE to gather around this 100-yard long table this year, we recognize that this is not practical or safe for our community. However - we all NEED TO CONNECT more than ever and eating a local meal together sounds wonderful!
The goals of this year’s events will are:
Build community by sharing food stories from our past and visions of a future sustainable food system
Maximize local sourcing
Provide strategies and resources for food insecure students and members of our community & beyond
How will it work? Cook a potato and add your favorite potato toppings in your own home. Look for local options with minimal packaging! Then, on Thursday, November 12 come to our table by connecting to our zoom link by 5:30pm - simple as that! Break out your fancy china if you’d like!
While nothing will replace actually gathering around a common table, we are hoping to take advantage of the perks of an online format. ANYONE is welcome - invite any other family and friends to log on with us, regardless of their geographical location. This is a chance for the Appalachian community to reach beyond our immediate community. We’re also dreaming big and hoping that food visionaries from all across the Appalachian region can join us too. Click here to receive updates and learn of our expanding guest list!
You gotta eat anyway, right? Why not cook a spud and join our “table” on November 12 at 5:30pm and inspire real change so that our future food system can be sustainable, equitable and resilient.
See you then!
