Prof. Mary Campbell from UT-Knoxville will be on campus on April 11 for a talk, "Mormonism's Polygamous Suffragettes," at 6:30 pm in room 114 Belk Library. Prof. Campbell is an historian of American art and photography. Her book, Charles Ellis Johnson and the Erotic Mormon Image (U of Chicago Press, 2016), examines the work of Johnson, a photographer in 1890s Salt Lake City who specialized in portraits of Mormon leaders (and their wives), with a side business in "spicy pictures of girls." Prof. Campbell's work draws on legal and religious histories, visual culture, and gender studies. Her lecture for Appalachian will focus on Johnson's portraits of polygamous wives.
