Summer Term 1 2019 Class: Criminal Justice Systems in the Pacific Northwest (Seattle, Washington)

Even though we just start fall semester, now is the time to start thinking about amazing study away classes for the summer!  Dr. Cathy Marcum and Dr. Elicka Sparks in the Department of Government and Justice Studies are planning a summer term 1 class that actually falls between graduation and the official beginning of summer term 1 (May 13-25, 2019).  The class would entail one week in the classroom in Boone (May 13-17, 2019) and travel to Seattle (May 20-25, 2019).  While in Seattle, we explore the operations and philosophy of criminal justice in the Northwest with a visit to a law enforcement agency, tour a prison, meet with a public defender and prosecutor, and visit a non-profit agency.  Students will also have free time to explore Seattle and participate in other exciting activities.  This class may count as a 3 credit required elective (depending on your major) OR a free elective. The cost of the class is the cost of tuition (approx $450) which is paid to ASU near the end of spring semester, as well as $1600 to the Office of Camps and Conferences (includes airfare, transportation, lodging, activities and breakfast every day).  The payment plan is as follows: deposit of $300 due January 30, 2019; payment of $650 due February 28, 2019; and final payment of $650 due March 31, 2019.  However, once you apply for the class and are approved to participate, you can go ahead and make as many small or large payments as you like before then if that is your preference (or the preference of the person who is paying for the class).   The link to apply for the class is here: We will be accepting applications until January 2019, but course spots will be awarded on a first come, first serve basis.  Once your application is approved, you will be sent a link where you can make payments for the class.  Please email Dr. Cathy Marcum at with questions.
