A Report from the Culture and Arts in Vienna Faculty-Led Trip

Honors Junior Marketing major and Commercial Photography minor Andrew Carros studied abroad this past summer in Vienna on an Appalachian faculty-led trip with Dr. Alexandra Hellenbrand (Professor of Global Studies), Dr. Victor Mansure (Music History Area Coordinator), and Dr. Jim Toub (Professor of Art). The program consisted of two interdisciplinary Honors seminars and studied the art, literature, psychology, politics and music of Vienna from around 1700 to the present, with a focus on Fin de Siècle Vienna (1880-1917). Andrew explained that during the Fin de Siècle, “modernism was on the rise, and radical changes in various forms of art began to develop.” On this trip, students experienced in Vienna first-hand how the effects of that time period still shape the cultural life of the modern city. They examined Vienna's unique urban landscape as well as its rich artistic, literary, political, and scientific traditions. In addition, they took several daylong excursions to important monuments outside of Vienna such as the concentration camp memorial Mauthausen, the Baroque Monastery at Melk, and Schloss Esterházy in Eisenstadt. As Andrew reflected, “the experiences and knowledge that I gained are invaluable.
