Hello Honors students,
Today's memo introduces Christopher Seitz, our Honors academic mentor for students majoring in Health Sciences. Since May 2023, Dr. Seitz has been guiding our students in navigating their academic journeys, building connections, and finding opportunities that align with their goals. He's all about fostering real relationships and making sure our students know they are supported. If you have any questions about discovering new opportunities, exploring your interests, or growing through collaboration, contact your academic mentor. Like Dr. Seitz, they are eager to help!

STEPS Research Traineeship
The Research Institute for Environment, Energy, and Economics (RIEEE) is searching for an undergraduate student to assist with the research conducted by its Science and Technologies for Phosphorus Sustainability (STEPS) Center. The student will use a novel approach called Knowledge Mapping to make connections among these projects and understand how they collectively address phosphorus sustainability in the High Country. CEL Day of Service: Hello High Country
The Office of Community-Engaged Leadership will be hosting its first day of service on September 7 from 9:00 – 2:00 p.m. During Days of Service, App State students collaborate with Boone non-profits to engage with the local community. For more information and to register, click here.
Call for research participants
Honors College student Alayna Hogston is seeking participants for the research required for her thesis. Her main goal is to collect and analyze data from students' previous post-concussion experience and their feedback on how App State faculty members can improve their accommodations of concussed students. The survey takes approximately 5 minutes to complete and participants can opt-in for a follow-up interview. Interested participants can complete the form here. Homecoming Blood Drive
The Office of Community-Engaged Leadership will be hosting its annual Homecoming Blood Drive on September 24 from 9:00 – 7:00 p.m. in the Holmes Convocation Center. This partnership with the American Red Cross provides pints of blood to people in need. For more information and to sign up to donate blood, click here.

The Cratis D. Williams School of Graduate Studies is accepting applications for its degree-granting programs through November 1. Hayes School of Music Concert: Pianist Robert Hamilton
The Hayes School of Music has invited critically-acclaimed pianist Robert Hamilton to perform on September 10 from 8:00 – 9:00 p.m. in the Rosen Concert Hall. Hamilton will perform pieces from world-renowned pianists during his concert. For more information about the concert, click here.
Music Humanities Series: Dr. Reeves Shulstad
The Hayes School of Music will host Dr. Reeves Shulstad, professor of musicology in the Hayes School of Music, for an installment of its Music Humanities Series. Dr. Shulstad’s presentation, titled, “Creative Female Networks and the Musical Career of Tui St. George Tucker,” will focus on the life of Tucker and how her networking influenced her musical career. Sustainable Energy Speaker Series Presentation
The Appalachian Energy Center, as a part of its Sustainable Energy Speaker Series, will welcome Ashley Edwards, head of Kempower, an electric vehicle firm that seeks to create fast-charging solutions for electric vehicles. The presentation, held on September 12 at 2:00 p.m., will focus on the future of electric modes of transportation. For more information, click here.
High Country Humanities: Folk Music as an Expression of Culture
High Country Humanities, in partnership with North Carolina Humanities, will host an event, titled “Folk Music as an Expression of Culture: Talks with Acoustic Demonstrations,” on September 22 from 2:45 – 4:00 p.m. Faculty from the Hayes School of Music will present on the folk music of Ukraine and Appalachia. Common Reading Author Visit
The Common Reading Program and the Quality Enhancement Plan will welcome Hope Jahren, author of the 2024 Common Reading book, “The Story of More: How We Got to Climate Change and Where to Go from Here” on September 24 at 7:00 p.m. Jahren will give a keynote address and will also be available for a Q&A and book signing after the event. Introducing Honors College academic mentor, Dr. Christopher Seitz

Since May 2023, Dr. Christopher Seitz, associate professor in the Department of Public Health and Exercise Science, has served as the academic mentor for Honors College students pursuing majors in the Beaver College of Health Sciences. Honors College mentors play a crucial role in the Honors College mission by supporting holistic development and fostering engagement beyond individual disciplines. Dr. Seitz views his role as an Honors College academic mentor as “helping students by giving encouragement, providing advice, and introducing students to others who can help them along their academic journey.” He values the holistic way of mentoring in the Honors College because of the important personal relationships he is able to foster with students.
