This document is a reflection on my thesis project. For my project, I acted as assistant dramaturg for the Appalachian State Department of Theatre and Dance’s 2009 production of Lysistrata. Though the position is difficult to define due to its relative newness, a dramaturg can generally be described as a theatre collaborator who helps to choose, shape, and interpret texts for performance and who assists in the realization of those texts and interpretations through various research, rehearsal participation and audience outreach. In this reflection I will briefly discuss the history of the field of dramaturgy and literary management, explore the functions and responsibilities of the dramaturg, describe the process of performing these functions for Lysistrata and examine the effects of dramaturgical work on the audience’s experience of the play.
