Prospective Students

At App State’s Honors College we believe in exploring, discovering, creating, innovating, and growing together. We invite you to join a community where your holistic development is supported, and where engagement across disciplines and collaboration are at the heart of everything we do.

Why choose Honors at App?

Our mission is to support your growth in every aspect of your life—intellectual, personal, and professional. We encourage you to engage beyond yourself, collaborating with others and embracing opportunities for cross-disciplinary exploration.

We value and embrace differences, making it our shared responsibility to create a welcoming and supportive environment where everyone feels appreciated and valued.

First-year Honors students live together in Cone Hall, which fosters a supportive and engaging community. Returning students can choose to stay next door in Summit Hall, maintaining their connection to the Honors community. Both dorms are conveniently located next to App Hall, where you’ll attend seminars and meet with your Honors Mentors.

Experience small, discussion-based, student-centered seminars that foster active learning and intellectual curiosity. Our courses are designed to challenge you and encourage innovative thinking in an interdisciplinary context.

Receive dedicated support from academic mentors who are committed to understanding your goals and connecting you with relevant opportunities. Our approach ensures that you have the guidance needed to navigate your academic and personal journey.

Embrace our international education programs to gain a broader understanding of global issues and cultural differences. Whether through faculty-led trips or semester-long study abroad programs, you’ll develop the skills needed to address complex challenges with humility and creativity.

Engage in closely mentored research and creative projects that push the boundaries of knowledge. Your Honors Thesis will allow you to collaborate with a faculty advisor, developing your critical thinking, research, and communication skills.

What to expect?

Integrated Advising: Benefit from personalized advising that supports your academic and personal growth. Our mentors are dedicated to helping you connect with opportunities that align with your goals and values.

Community Involvement: Get involved with student organizations and community activities that reflect our commitment to collaboration and leadership. Our student-run Appalachian Honors Association (AHA!) and other groups foster a sense of belonging and engagement.

Financial Support: For first-year students, our primary financial support is the Chancellor’s Scholarship, awarded to ten exceptional students each year. Once enrolled, all Honors College students have access to additional funding to support experiential learning, including an international education scholarship to support study abroad, the Garrett and Dane Ward scholarships to support student researchers, and a special research grant that can fund both research and conference travel.
