This thesis examines the roles of females presented in 15 films from Japan’s Studio Ghibli by using first-wave feminism. The films directed by Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata, Tomomi Mochizuki, Yoshifumi Kondo, Hiroyuki Morita, Goro Miyazaki, and Hiromasa Yonebayashi each have distinct messages about the roles that women and girls play in society, and this thesis takes a look at the ways, both positive and negative, that females are portrayed in these films.
