Message from Dean Jeff Vahlbusch

Dear Honors students, friends, colleagues,

Remembering Professor Emory Maiden

It is our privilege and duty to remember and honor those whose talents, hard work, and dedication to students nurtured the culture that we thrive in at Appalachian and in the Honors College, and built the foundations that we stand on.

Dr. Lynn Moss Sanders, professor of English and Folklore and director of the ASU University Honors Program (now the Honors College) from 2004 to 2008, has contributed a brief eulogy for an extraordinary Honors faculty member, teacher, and human being:  Dr. Emory Maiden, Jr.:

ASU professor emeritus and the 2012 Honors College "Teacher of the Year," Dr. Emory Maiden, passed away on April 13, 2020.  Dr. Maiden began his teaching career at Appalachian in 1973; even after his retirement in 2012, he continued to teach one course each academic year until his death. In addition to the Honors College Award, Dr. Maiden received the University of North Carolina Board of Governors Teaching Award in 1997.

Dr. Maiden’s academic specialty was 19th century American literature, and he regularly taught a Sophomore Honors Seminar in the English department.  Over the years Dr. Maiden also developed an expertise in speculative fiction that was often the topic for his Honors College courses, including a favorite for several years:  "From Hairy Beasts to Harry Potter."

This past week, many former honors students have shared their memories of Dr. Maiden, including Dr. Meredith McCarroll (class of 1998), who writes that Dr. Maiden “modeled a life of the mind” with “laughter and ease.” Other students who wish to submit a testimonial about Dr. Maiden may send them to Dr. Leo Flores, chair of the ASU English department.

Thank you, Dr. Maiden. We will remember you, and will strive to emulate you.

Jeff Vahlbusch
