Business education in U.S. universities is under heavy criticism from employers, politicians and students. However, it faces also large competitive threats from alternative forms of education such as “massively open online courses,” which are usually free and are perceived to deliver superior quality. In order for U.S. business schools to remain competitive, drastic changes are needed. This study examines the problems business education is facing in the context the history of business education. Furthermore, this study introduces the reader to the realm of “strategic foresight,” and introduces an improved methodology for decision-making that takes a “contextual shift” into consideration. This method then is used to identify possible future threats and opportunities for business education. At the conclusion of the study the author identifies possible actions available today to make business schools more competitive again.
