Opportunities and Information for Honors Students

Dear friends of Honors education at Appalachian,

In our final Honors Wednesday Memo of this past academic year, I wrote looking ahead to our Honors College spring 2022 graduation ceremony — always my favorite workday of any year!

From the podium in the Parkway Ballroom, I get to celebrate each student graduating from the Honors College individually, detailing their proudest achievements in Honors and at Appalachian; sometimes delving a bit into their Honors research, scholarship, and/or creative activity; and often revealing their next big steps in their education or careers, all in the loving presence of their families, friends, supporters.

Before I call the first student to the podium, I invite the audience to do this: "Please revel in the achievements of the students you know, but also please carefully listen to and revel in our celebration of the students you don’t know! Individually, each is extraordinary and wonderfully impressive, at least the equal of graduates from any fine university and Honors College in the country. But taken together, well: I think they are unbeatable, and their accomplishments will leave you, as they leave me: both breathless and full of hope for our human future."

Honors College graduates: we wish you all the best, and look forward to following your lives and careers with close attention and admiration!

Jeff

Honors students James Auwn, Emma Clugsten, Alison Cody, Aidan Keaveney, and Annie Manges were accompanied by Dr. Heather Waldroup, associate director of the Honors College and professor of art history, on their trip to Birmingham, Alabama, from March 30 to April 2, 2022, to attend and present at the Southern RegionalHonors Council (SRHC) Conference. The SRHC is a professional organization that supports honors programs and colleges at institutions of higher education throughout the Southeast. These students presented their research on various topics, including gifted education, digital technology and religion, music, and more. The 2023 SRHC Conference will be held in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Honors College encourages all Honors students to be on the lookout early next year for the call for proposals for the 2023 conference and to plan to submit.
