Greetings Honors students!
Today’s memo is packed with opportunities: concerts, lectures, new clubs, and ways to give back to your community. Get involved. Honors education is about creating meaningful experiences and finding a community that helps you grow. Honors College Front Office Assistant Applications
The Honors College is seeking two Honors students to work as assistants in the front office to start immediately. Students must be eligible for federal work study to apply. Honors College front office assistants are responsible for managing communication with students, parents, faculty, and staff, as well as assisting with record keeping, social media, and event planning. Students are paid $12 an hour and have flexibility with scheduling hours during the work week. To apply to the position, click here. For any questions, contact Viktoriia Kovtun.
Construction, Design, and Sustainable Technology Fair
The Career Development Center will host a Construction, Design, and Sustainable Technology Fair on September 18 from 12:00 – 3:00 p.m. Various organizations from these fields will be present so that students can explore opportunities for internships and jobs. CEL Homecoming Blood Drive
The Office of Community-Engaged Leadership is hosting its annual Homecoming Blood Drive on September 24 from 9:00 – 7:00 p.m. In partnership with the American Red Cross, the Blood Drive will donate pints of blood to those in need. Appointments are preferred, but walk-ins are available. For more information and to register, click here.
2024 Mountain Studies Lecture
The College of Arts and Sciences will host its Mountain Studies Lecture on October 9 from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. The lecture will feature Dr. María Nieves Zedeño who will present “After the Ashfall: What Ancient Environmental Disasters Can Tell Us About Human Attachments to the Landscape.” For more information, click here.
Multicultural Concerns in Health Professions
A newly formed club on campus, Multicultural Concerns in Health Professions (MC2) is open for new members. The club will have conversations about different cultures, improve students’ leadership skills and involvement with social justice, and tackle multicultural issues that impact the health professions and those they serve. Students who are interested and are pursuing a health profession are encouraged to join the club. Their first meeting will be held on September 12 at 7:00 p.m. For more information and questions, contact Deanna Perez.

Hayes School of Music Faculty Recital
The Hayes School of Music will hold a recital with its faculty on September 12 from 8:00 – 9:00 p.m. Violin professors Drs. Nancy Bargerstock and Pedro Maia will perform with piano professor, Dr. Bair Shagdaron, on a variety of classical music pieces. For more information, click here.
Global Good Conference
The Walker College of Business will be hosting the Global Good Conference on September 13 from 9:00 – 1:00 p.m. The conference will highlight speakers who have addressed global challenges in sustainability and innovation. Hayes School of Music: Tui St. George Tucker @ 100 Symposium
The Hayes School of Music, in honor of the 100th birthday of female composer Tui St. George Tucker, will host a symposium honoring the life and work of the composer on September 15-16. The symposium will feature breakout sessions, a keynote speech, and performances of Tucker’s work. To view the schedule and learn more about the symposium, click here.
National Hispanic Heritage Month Concert
The Hayes School of Music will host a concert to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month on September 22 from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. The concert will feature the recitation of poetry by professors from the Spanish and English departments and the performance by Hayes School of Music faculty of pieces made by Hispanic composers. Collegiate Recovery Community Speaker
The Collegiate Recovery Community will host a recovery speaker meeting on September 30 from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. The event will feature individuals who have achieved long-term recovery to share their personal stories, offering attendees insight and inspiration. Honors College alumni Steven and Anna Rubin honored at 2024 Alumni Awards Gala

Appalachian State University’s Alumni Association honored 13 App State alumni at their 2024 Alumni Awards Gala on July 13. These alumni have made an impact on society and the university, and included App State Honors College alumni and former Chancellor’s Scholars Steven Rubin ‘04 and Anna Rubin ‘05. Having met at a Chancellor’s Scholars dinner as undergraduates, the Rubins were honored for the work they do in their communities. Steven is currently the chief financial officer and financial advisor for Hege Financial Group, where he is noted for making critical decisions regarding the group’s marketing, communications, and practice management. Anna began her career working for the Department of Social Services, but has since expanded to roles with Winston Salem/Forsyth County Schools and World Relief, a nonprofit that works to resettle refugees.
