Hello Honors College students,
Last month, I was honored when Leah Boone, a senior Honors College student and opinion editor of The Appalachian, invited me to share my professional journey as part of Women’s History Month. As you read the column, shared as this week’s spotlight story, you will see that my path was carved by the support of many strong mentors and supporters along the way.
Recently, I learned that some well-deserved words of praise I shared with a student in Calculus I helped them realize their potential as a math major. Now, they are graduating with departmental honors in mathematics. Hearing that story was a full-circle moment for me. I needed others to help me see my own strengths, and now I get to be that person for someone else.
When you see promise in someone, let them know. Even if your comments seem small to you, they could make a big difference for the person you are supporting. By encouraging each other, we can all grow and succeed together.
Best wishes,
Vicky

Dr. Vicky Klima’s Path to Leadership Paved by Supportive Mentorship
In a column for The Appalachian, Dr. Vicky Klima, associate vice provost for the Honors College, has shared how mentorship support shaped her leadership path. Dr. Klima’s story began when two faculty members encouraged her to pursue a major in math. Along the way, Dr. Klima faced stereotypes that math wasn’t a field for women, but she persevered, pursuing her doctorate. With continued support from her mentors, Dr. Klima has been able to overcome feelings of self-doubt and imposter syndrome. “When someone believes in you and encourages you to take the next step on your journey, listen to them. Trust in the potential they recognize and lean on them to strengthen your confidence,” said Dr. Klima.
