Dear Honors Students,
I hope you are all having a rejuvenating summer break so far!
This week’s memo features volunteer opportunities, research participation, live performances on campus with Appalachian Summer, and even baby goat yoga. Whether you are spending the summer in Boone, your hometown, or traveling, be sure to engage with the local community. Maybe you can volunteer, do an internship, work in a new position, or travel to learn about a new place, language, and culture.
Let’s make the most of our summer break!
Best wishes,
Kaylie Morales

Honors College alumna Stacy Thornton ’25 is heading to UNC Chapel Hill in August to pursue a Master of Science (M.S.) in speech and hearing sciences. Thornton came to App State and the Honors College in Fall 2021. She graduated in May 2025 with a Bachelor of Science in communication sciences and disorders and minors in American Sign Language and Appalachian studies. Thornton feels that her Honors education at App State has prepared her for this specific graduate program at UNC Chapel Hill.
She has this piece of advice to share to current Honors College students, “When it comes down to it, growth occurs when you step outside of your comfort zone. You’ll quickly learn how connected everyone is in the grand scheme of things and might land yourself a pivotal opportunity that may not have otherwise been available to you had you stayed in your comfort zone.”
