Traumatic brain injury can result in debilitating consequences, including a loss of speech, language skills, or cognitive communication awareness. Evaluation and treatment of speech, language, and swallowing disorders caused by traumatic brain injury are within the scope of practice of speech-language pathologists. According to the American Speech-LanguageHearing Association (ASHA), speech-language pathologists evaluate, diagnose, and treat swallowing, speech, language, and cognitive-communication disorders in individuals of all ages. This paper will address appropriate conditions for speech-language intervention, and the most beneficial time frames to address conditions post-trauma. The following information will prove and demonstrate how communicative and cognitive effects of traumatic brain injury can be reduced or eliminated by appropriate speech-language therapy.
