Organic Anion Transport in Live Caenorhabditis

Organic anion transporters (OATs), members ofthe major facilitator superfamily, promiscuously excrete negatively charged xenobiotic and antiviral drugs in the kidney and liver of mammals. Investigation in this project focuses on a single mammalian OA T homologue present in Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans). Use of anionic fluorescein has previously been successful in assays to verify interaction ofmammalian OAT substrates and inhibitors with the C. elegans OAT (CeOAT). In this research, the accumulation offluorescein is examined by fluorescence microscopy.

The "Doing Time" Experiences of Sex Offenders: A Critical Assesment of the Effectiveness of Imprisonment Policies and Reintegration Outcomes

Sex offenders and sex crimes incite a great deal of fear among the general public and as a result, lawmakers have passed a variety of social policies designed to protect community members from sexual victimization (Lees & Tewksbury, 2006). Legislative initiatives since the early 1990s have included sex offender registration, community notification, civil commitment, residence restrictions, enhanced sentencing guidelines, and electronic monitoring (LaFond, 2005).

Coming to the Surface: Finding Alternatives to the Lobster Industry in La Moskitia

In the La Moskitia region of Honduras, boom and bust have dominated the economy since the 1600's. The most recent of the cycles is driven by the lobster-diving industry. This industry has not only become unsustainable, but has had many negative social, economic and environmental impacts. The Honduran government has set a goal of phasing out lobster-diving in La Moskitia by 2013 but have been unable to provide sufficient alternatives in the region.

Trophic and Population Ecology of Introduced Flathead Catfish Pylodictis Olivaris in the Lower Tar River, NC

Introduced apex predators can have dramatic effects on community structure and function of invaded ecosystems. Flathead catfish (Pylodictis olivaris) are native to the Mississippi, Mobile and western Gulf drainages. However, this large, piscivorous species has been widely introduced by agencies and anglers and recently-founded populations occur in most Atlantic Slope drainages. I studied P. olivaris diet, condition and growth in the lower Tar River near Greenville, NC.

A Tempestous Path: The History of Turkey's Ongoing Fight for Accession to the European Union

The issue of Turkey’s accession to the European Union has been a highly controversial one for the past fifty years for a number of reasons. Though first submitting its application to the European Union for associate membership in 1957 and for full membership in 1987, Turkey has been continually tossed aside and pushed to the back of the EU agenda over the past few decades.  While the European Union has tiptoed around the issue to avoid major conflict between the two parties, the Union nevertheless has a laundry list of reservations regarding Turkey’s consideratio

Final Offer Arbitration in Major League Baseball: Determining Optimal Decisions

This thesis looks at final offer arbitration and its role in Major League Baseball. The intention of the research was to identify tendencies and patterns among players going to arbitration. In order to do this linear regression models were used. The dependent variables explored were the final salary and the results of the arbitration case. The independent variables were performance metrics. The goal was to estimate the player's marginal revenue product so as to get a better idea of what the player and the team needed to offer in arbitration.

An Academic Analysis of the Food Stamp Program: Past, Present, and Future

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) has adapted and developed since its beginning in the 1930s. Starting out as a program giving surplus food from farmers to those in need, SNAP has become a nationwide program to provide adequate nutrition to low-income households (Roth, n.d.). Looking at past and present policies, along with unintended consequences, this thesis will analyze if SNAP is meeting its goal of providing access to a healthy diet to households with low-income (SNAP 2012).
