This thesis studies the phenomenon of Spanish Writing Centers around the United States and explores the need for assistance in foreign language departments within the compositions concerns of the students.  The literature reviewed focuses on where higher education Spanish has failed to provide students with composition instruction and why it is so difficult to incorporate such educational strategies given current pedagogy.  The case studies focus on six universities around the United States and the ways Spanish Writing Centers have been created within their institutional frameworks.  the Appalachian State chapter focuses on students and faculty from Appalachian's Spanish program and the needs of this particular program, toward the end of the proposal included in Chapter Five for a future center at Appalachian.  The overall project seeks to assemble a perviously unpublished knowledge set gleaned from the experiences of Spanish students and faculty around the country.
