Caroline Kuhn presented at the Lloyd International Honors College’s 22nd Annual Undergraduate Honors Symposium

On Friday, March 22, 2022, Honors first-year student Caroline Kuhn presented "Patriarchal Ideology and Creole Culture in Kate Chopin’s The Awakening (1899)" at the Lloyd International Honors College’s 22nd Annual Undergraduate Honors Symposium held virtually at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. Kuhn double majors in professional writing and Spanish. Although it is unusual for first-years to present their work at conferences, Caroline took advantage of this outstanding opportunity, and presented her work in a panel with two other Honors students from North Carolina universities.

About her experience, Caroline wrote:

"Presenting my essay on feminist themes in The Awakening was a great exercise in condensing my work. I had to pare down a 16-page research paper to a 5-7 minute speech, which was not easy. However, since I'm learning how to write concisely in my professional writing courses, this was good practice. When I presented, it was much less stressful than I had anticipated because it felt like everyone was in the same boat. Overall, it was very fulfilling to listen to presenters from other NC Honors Colleges speak so passionately about their interests and to receive the same level of interest in my work! I'll definitely be submitting a paper for the next issue as I look forward to interacting with this community in the future!"

The Lloyd International Honors College’s Annual Undergraduate Honors Symposium typically has excellent participation from honors students across North Carolina with twelve institutions participating. They offer an awards category  for visiting students with awards of $250, $150, and $100 for the top three visiting presentations. There is no registration fee to submit a paper or to virtually attend the Symposium. The Honors College encourages all Honors students to be on the lookout early next year for the call for proposals for the 2023 conference and to plan to submit. Hopefully this is the first of many venues in which Caroline will share her research!
