Honors Junior Mary Kate McCann joined faculty from Appalachian’s French department this summer on a short-term study abroad trip to Paris, France. The class studied French culture, history and language. This opportunity complemented her major in Global Studies and minor in French. As Mary Kate reports, “I had class in front of original works of great artists like Monet, Degas, and Van Gogh. My classmates and I got to learn about all the French rebellions in the squares where they took place. I so enjoyed learning about French history because it dates back so much farther than ours. We visited monuments like the Notre Dame de Paris Cathedral, the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe, the Sacré-Coeur, the Palais Garnier, the Louvre Museum and many more. I got to put my French speaking skills to the test with native speakers by ordering food and asking for directions. I highly recommend going somewhere you speak the language, otherwise, you might end up lost or eating ox tongue. This was a great way to fulfill my study abroad requirement for Honors because Paris is rich with diverse perspectives and excellent food. It also counted for three credit hours and only took two weeks!”
