Sam Jenkins Learns to Sail a Viking Ship

Honors junior, history major, and anthropology minor, Sam Jenkins spent this past summer in Denmark with Harvard University’s Viking Studies program. As Sam describes, “It was a super fun, super awesome two month learning extravaganza!” He spent a month on the island of Samsø at an archaeological field school at a Viking Age site called Tønnesminde.

Following the archaeological field school, Sam spent another month studying Viking Age literature at the Aarhus University, in Aarhus, Denmark. With its emphasis on narrative tradition along with the archaeological record, these combined experiences were immersive in Viking literature and the pagan world-view.
