21st Annual Undergraduate Honors Symposium

The Lloyd International Honors College presents the 21st Annual Undergraduate Honors Symposium to showcase Honors students from various institutions across North Carolina. Sessions start at 10:00 am on March 12th and the Awards Ceremony for Symposium begins at 4:00 pm. The schedule for the presenters can be found here and sign up to attend here. 

Summer 2021 Paid Internship with Democracy NC

Democracy NC Is seeking outstanding students to become frontline advocates for democracy. The summer 2021 intern position is full-time, fully-remote from late May to late July, and interns will earn a taxable stipend of $4,800. Applications can be found here and are due by 7:00 pm on March 15th.

Spring Alternative Service Experience

Join ACT March 13th – March 15th on their Alternative Service Experience or ASE where they will serve alongside Watauga County’s Project on Aging to encourage independence and promote wellness through supportive services for the county’s older adults. This program includes educational, virtual, and hands-on opportunities such as creative thinking, arts and crafts, meaningful and educational video production, and thoughtful dialogue. TH!NK UK Online Sessions

TH!NK UK is the largest scale event to bring higher education in England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland to North Americans. Students and advisors are invited to their general and subject specific sessions, and there will be opportunities to connect with universities in 1-2-1 sessions. Paid Internship at the Institute for Policy Studies

The Institute for Policy Studies is accepting applications for their Barnet, Landau, and Raskin Next Leaders Program. This 10-week paid program offers young activists training in public scholarship such as the connection between policy research, advocacy, and grassroots activism. Next Leaders looks to sharpen young scholar-activists’ voices and hone their skills. Applications are due by 5:00 pm on March 21st and more details can be found here.

Live from Death Row: A Conversation on Justice and Punishment

The Department of Government and Justice Studies and the College of Arts and Sciences presents “Live from Death Row: A Conversation on Justice and Punishment.” This event features Tessie Castillo and two of her co-authors of Crimson Letters: Voices from Death Row will be speaking about life on death row and their search for hope and purpose behind bars in North Carolina. Attend virtually from 11:30 am – 1:00 pm on March 11th and contact here for the link.

International Women’s Day: Brew Day and Gallery

Join the Appalachian State University Women’s CenterLGBT CenterMulticultural Center, in partnership with OASIS, Inc., Blowing Rock Ale House, and Angry Troll Brewing for a day full of friends, new experiences, career and professional development, and fun on from 11:30 am – 7:30 pm on March 13th. This event will feature small guided tours of microbrewed beer production, information and merchandise tables, and a raffle for several local gift cards. All proceeds from this event will be donated to OASIS Inc. For more information, click here.

GenHERation Campus Connection Tour

Join the GenHERation Campus Connection Tour at Appalachian State University which will allow young women to meet successful female executives, participate in skill-building simulations, explore career opportunities, and learn how they can meet leaders at the most innovative companies in America. Register here to attend from 3:00 – 5:00 pm on March 16th.

Nirmala Erevelles on Disability, Eco(in)justice, and Transnational Solidarities

The Gender, Women’s, and Sexuality Studies (GWS) Program presents “Disability, Eco(in)justice, and Transnational Solidarities” which features guest speaker Nirmala Erevelles, professor of social and cultural studies in education at the university of Alabama. International German-Jewish Studies Conference

The Center for Judaic, Holocaust, and Peace Studies, in conjunction with the Southeast German Studies Consortium, presents the International German-Jewish Studies Conference featuring workshops and lectures. The keynote speaker, Professor S. Schueler-Springorum, director of Zentrum für Antisemitismusforschung in Berlin, will present the lecture titled “Gender, Sex and Violence: Race Defilement in Nazi Germany.” The conference will take begin at 8:30 am March 18th and will conclude on March 19th. Honors Alumna Taylor Gibbs ’20 Attending Wake Forest University School of Law

Recent Honors alumna Taylor Gibbs ’20 has decided to attend Wake Forest University School of Law beginning Fall 2021 semester after also receiving acceptances at Elon University School of Law, University of North Carolina School of Law, University of South Carolina School of Law, and Washington and Lee University School of Law. Gibbs shared, “I ultimately have decided to go to Wake Forest, my dream school!” At Appalachian, Gibbs majored in political studies, minored in religious studies, and completed her Honors thesis titled “Is the Protection of Minorities Worth the Suppression of Speech? The Effects of Political Correctness on American Universities and College Campuses.”
