To preserve more of your precious summer, here's a short Honors Monthly Memo packed with opportunities and celebrating the extraordinary summer activities of two Honors College students.

Opportunities for you:  work in the Honors College, work elsewhere, U.S. foreign policy seminar, counseling services, Baby Goat Yoga (!), food and music, biking, MerleFest!

Honors College Hiring students for federal Work Study positions 

The Honors College is hiring 2-3 positions for office assistant as federal work study for the 2021-22 academic year. The purpose of an office assistant is to support the customer service operations of the Honors College. Duties include communicating with students, parents, faculty, and staff by answering phones, replying to emails, and directing walk-ins. This position reports to Ms. Jessica Yandow and also assists the Honors College staff with record keeping, social media, research, and event planning. The salary starts at $10.00 per hour and requires 6-9 hours per week. Find the full description here and apply no later than July 30th by 5:00 pm.  

Intercultural Student Affairs Peer Mentors

Intercultural Student Affairs is looking for students to serve as Peer Mentors for ASCEND 2021. ASCEND is a Supplemental Education Program intentionally developed to provide incoming students form historically underrepresented backgrounds the opportunity to bond with current students, become connected to faculty and staff, and feel empowered to succeed at Appalachian State. Blue Ridge Women in Agriculture Hiring

Blue Ridge Women in Agriculture (BRWIA) is hiring positions: satellite project coordinator, food hub assistant, product support AmeriCorps VISTA member, and F.A.R.M. Café AmeriCorps VISTA member. For details on each position, click here.

Appalachian Voices Hiring

Appalachian Voices, in coordination with the Energy Justice NC Coalition, is hiring for the position of project coordinator to assist in the development of a “People’s Energy Plan” for the state of North Carolina. The People’s Energy Plan is a grassroots effort to create a platform for systemic energy market reform that is rooted in social justice and supported by diverse stakeholders that have not traditionally had a voice in energy policy debates. The position is based in Raleigh/Durham with remote possible. Compensation is $20 per hour 20 hours a week for a 1 year term. Click here for more details.

Inside U.S. Foreign Policy in North Africa and the Middle East 

USA Study Abroad, a part of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA), and its Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program invite American undergraduate and graduate students from any field of study to attend a free virtual “Inside U.S. Foreign Policy” series. This series will give an inside look at how the State Department designs and implements U.S. foreign policy around the world. The three hour seminars will also feature a panel of Gilman alumni. Upcoming next on July 29th from 11:00 am – 2:30 pm is “U.S. Foreign Policy in Sub-Saharan Africa.” Visit here for more information.

Counseling Center Summer Services 

The Counseling and Psychological Services Center has a variety of options for supporting students this summer. Students are eligible for counseling during the summer if they are enrolled in at least one of the summer sessions or if they were enrolled in spring semester 2021 and enrolled for fall semester 2021. All services are free including initial consultations, TeleMental health counseling, emergency services, Let’s TeleTalk! and self-help. Visit here to explore their options.  

Baby Goat Yoga at Apple Hill Farm

Join this fun yoga class outdoors and connect with a farm experience and baby goats. Bring your own mat and come dressed to maybe get a little messy. The classes are every Friday at 5:30 pm. Click here for more information.

Sugar Mountain Grillin’ and Chillin’ Concert Series

Enjoy food, drinks, and tunes on the big deck overlooking the golf course and panoramic mountain views. A special dinner buffet is offered by the Caddyshack Café from 5:30 – 8:30 pm, with live music running 6:00 – 9:00 pm. Join in free from June 16th through September 1st. Click here for details.

Boone Gran Fondo Cycling Event

On August 1st at 7:45 am, riders can meet at Capua Law firm to take a ride around the mountain roads of Boone. Downloadable course maps with routes of three distances are available here with pricing information as well.

MerleFest Tickets on Sale

MerleFest is an annual "traditional plus" music festival held in Wilkesboro, North Carolina on the campus of Wilkes Community College held September 16-19th. Click here for tickets.

 

In the Honors Spotlight 

Karolyn Martin funds Honors education by competing with Miss America Organization

Karolyn Martin, a rising senior in the Honors College majoring in communication studies with a minor in marketing, placed as the Second Runner Up out of thirty-four women in the Miss North Carolina Scholarship Competition on June 26, 2021 at the High Point Theatre. Martin won Miss Moore County in both 2020 and 2021, and a total of $7,000 in scholarships. She also received the Quality of Life Award for community service. Martin, who is currently progressing towards graduation from the Honors College, plans to do her thesis research on the effect of social media and marketing on body image and eating habits. This project will combine her academic areas of focus with her social impact initiative #SelfKare: Eat to Success, which promotes nourishing habits while taking the focus off of weight and appearance.
