Dear Honors students, in the Honors College and in departmental Honors programs,

Here is a great chance to present your research, scholarship, and/or creative work!

Appalachian's Office of Student Research invites you to work with your faculty mentor to submit an abstract based on original research and creative endeavors (performance, plays, readings, exhibits, displays, etc.) for presentation at the 2021 State of North Carolina Undergraduate Research and Creativity Symposium (SNCURCS). The conference will be held virtually on Saturday, November 13, 2021, and there is no registration fee :-). The submission deadline requiring abstract approval by your faculty mentor is October 18, 2021.

Please reach out to me with questions! And, if you are wondering:  yes, you do want to do this, this year or next! I'll explain why in next week's Honors Wednesday Memo.

Yours,

Jeff

Honors thesis launches Carter Blue ’20 into full-time advocacy with OASIS

As a client services advocate at OASIS (Opposing Abuse with Service, Information and Shelter) in Boone, Appalachian State University alumna Carter Blue ’20 said she enjoys the variety in her job, which includes engaging in crisis support services with clients, serving at the OASIS housing shelter, acting as a medical advocate for sexual assault victims and connecting people to other agencies and resources. Photo submitted.

In the story, "App State alumna Carter Blue ’20 — a champion for survivors of violence" published September 13, 2021 in AppalachianToday, Jan Todd writes how this Department of Sociology Honors student's thesis project led to her to employment with OASIS (Opposing Abuse with Service, Information and Shelter) — a nonprofit organization serving Watauga and Avery counties. Blue's Honors thesis project on intimate partner violence directly relates to her current position as a client services advocate for domestic violence survivors. For her Honors thesis, Blue worked with Dr. Ellen Lamont, associate professor in App State’s Department of Sociology, as her director.

Read more about Blue’s involvement here.
