Honors Wednesday Memo

Opportunities and Information for Honors Students

edited by Lakin Stevens

September 29, 2021

Dear Appalachian Honors students,

Last week in this space I promised to tell you why you should strive hard to present your research, scholarship, and/or creative activity at events like the 2021 State of North Carolina Undergraduate Research and Creativity Symposium (SNCURCS).

Here's a secret all teachers know:  You don't really know something until you can explain it to others. Thucydides put it this way in the 5th Century BCE:  "A person who has the knowledge but lacks the power clearly to express it is no better off than if they never had any ideas at all" (Rex Warner translation, Penguin). And: presenting gives you the gift of an audience, and invites them to help you improve your thinking and your teaching.

Please reach out to me and/or your faculty mentors and advisors to find out how to start. It's never too soon.

Yours,

Jeff
