Congratulations! Today is Reading Day, and that means we're wrapping up this good fall semester and heading off for relaxation, family and friend time, and, let's hope, some adventure.

Please skim the opportunities in this Honors Wednesday Memo. One of them might transform you and your future.

And please read today's Spotlight Story! We are thrilled to announce that Honors College Academic Mentor Dr. Vicky Klima has won a major award for academic advising. Dr. Klima's story teaches us about Honors education, top-notch academic mentoring, and the work and dedication of great professors and advisors. Apply for the App State Student Media Board

Faculty, staff, students, and alumni can apply to serve on the App State Student Media Board (SMB) for the 2021-2022 academic year. The SMB supports and advises the student media organizations at Appalachian State like The Appalachian90.5 WASU-FMThe Peel Literature & Arts Review, and AppTV with responsibilities such as student leadership selection, advising on budgets, and discussing allocation of funding. The board meets at least three times in the academic year on Friday afternoons. Fill out an interest form to apply by December 1st for faculty/staffstudents, or alumni. Contact here with questions.

22nd Annual Undergraduate Honors Symposium  

The Lloyd International Honors College’s 22nd Annual Undergraduate Honors Symposium will be held virtually March 25, 2022. Honors students are invited to submit research-based papers written in any discipline. There is a chance to win awards ranging from $100-250 for the top three visiting presentations. There is no fee to submit or attend. Apply by December 20th here. Contact Dr. Angela Bolte, Assistant Dean of Lloyd International Honors College, with any questions. 

Undergraduate Research Assistantship Program  

The Spring 2022 Undergraduate Research (URA) Assistantships offer highly motivated full time undergraduate students the opportunity to work closely with a Faculty mentor on the Faculty member’s research, scholarship, or creative activity. A Faculty member with an undergraduate student is encouraged to apply. All disciplines are welcome. The grants focus on the faculty member’s research. URA’s can begin work in early February 2022. Apply here by January 19th and award notifications will be announced by late January.

Bo Henderson/Ed Springs Scholarship

The Bo Henderson/Ed Springs Scholarship is available to enrolled undergraduate and graduate Appalachian State students who are involved within the LGBTQ+ community. The 2021-2022 scholarship will be awarded for the Spring 2022 semester. Applicants must submit the online application, a resume, a letter of reference from Appalachian State faculty or staff. 2022 Agroecology Scholars Program in Research and Extension (ASPIRE)

Applications for the Center for Environmental Farming Systems (CEFS) Agroecology Scholars Program in Research and Extension (ASPIRE) are open until February 18th. This 10-week individualized summer research and extension experience gives participants the opportunity to learn about sustainable agriculture and community food systems from a broad systems perspective, while receiving close mentorship and access to research and professional development training. Participants receive a $4,000 stipend, housing at North Carolina State University, and the opportunity to present their research at a scientific meeting. No previous research or extension experience necessary and underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply. Learn more and apply here. Contact here with questions.

Forum and Panel Hosted by Interim Chief Diversity Officer

Interim chief diversity officer Jamie Parson will be hosting a forum and panel discussion for students, faculty, and staff to discuss the impacts of the most recent trials on members of the Appalachian State community. On December 1st at 7:00 pm in room 224 of I.G. Greer will be “Brave Spaces Forum: Students.” Register here to attend via Zoom. On December 7th at 7:00 pm in Rough Ridge (room 415) of the Plemmons Student Union will be “Panel Discussion on Recent Verdicts.” Register here to join via Zoom.

Tickets on Sale for the Schaefer Center Presents Spring 2022

The Schaefer Center Presents Spring 2022 currently has tickets on sale for their spring season. The lineup includes BalletX: The Little Prince, a story ballet for the entire family inspired by the classic children’s novella; Nobuntu, an all-female acapella quintet from Zimbabwe; and acclaimed Americana-country singer-songwriter Rosanne Cash. The season also includes two special family matinees designed for young audiences, part of the APPlause! Family Series: an interactive concert with Western Piedmont Symphony and excerpts from The Little Prince. Holiday gift certificates are available for purchase by calling or visiting the box office Monday-Friday from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm. The box office will be closed starting December 13th and opening on January 10th at 9:00 am. Tickets can always be purchased online here.

2022 Bioarcheology field school medieval cemetery funerary excavation

ArchaeoTek offers the summer research experience of bioarchaeology field school in medieval cemetary funerary excavation. This program provides a unique opportunity to conduct extensive training and research on a well preserved medieval cemtary in Transylania, Romania with in situ remains dating from the 11th to 18th century. The 4 week sessions take place in the summer of 2022. Explore the program more here and contact Dr. Andre Gonciar here with questions.

 

In the Honors Spotlight

Dr. Vicky Klima awarded the 2020-2021 Undergraduate Advising Council's Excellence in Academic Advising Faculty Advising Award

Dr. Vicky Klima has been selected as the 2020-2021 recipient of the Undergraduate Advising Council's Excellence in Academic Advising Faculty Advising Award. Dr. Klima is a professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences and a faculty advisor for students in that major department. Dr. Klima is also an Honors College academic mentor for Honors College students majoring in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Dr. Klima joined the faculty in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Appalachian in 2003 and her classrooms become increasingly more interactive with each passing semester. In addition to teaching in the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Dr. Klima regularly teaches Honors seminars in the Honors College like HON 1515: Visualizing a Just Society and HON 2515: Data for Social Justice. Dr. Klima also serves the Honors College as part of the Center for Academic Excellence’s faculty champion program. In this role, she supports all faculty in their teaching Honors seminars for the Honors College.
