Volume 5, Issue 29

April 20, 2022

Note from Jeff:

Dear Honors students and other good friends,

Today I have the great pleasure of introducing Kistler Hunt as the incoming editor of the Honors Wednesday MemoNext week we'll also read a farewell from outgoing HWM editor Lakin Stevens, who happily can stay on a bit to help us all with this editorial transition.

Hear from Kistler here:

Dear fellow Honors students and all friends of Honors,

I am excited to introduce myself as the new editor of the Honors Wednesday Memo! It’s a wonderful honor to be a part of this fantastic community full of innovation, collaboration, and a tight-knit spirit. The mentorship, comraderies, and connections between Honors faculty and students are like no other. You are not only known as a student, but as a person as well. Things like these make Honors so incredibly special to me. As I find my place here, I look forward to growing with this community.

Since coming to Appalachian in August 2021, I have been fond of the Memo. It serves as an important timepiece, the perfect way to communicate all of the exciting happenings that Honors has to offer. The Memo enables us to relish all of the wonderful accomplishments and celebrate all of the incredible work of Honors students, faculty, and alumni.

Part of my decision to join the Honors College was due to its exuberant familial atmosphere. There is an overwhelming sense of support throughout the Honors College, and that stuck out to me. Growing up in a small town, that sense of community is something that I value greatly. It’s been inspiring to learn more about Honors education and to also involve myself in activities that further emphasize the family-like feeling that enticed me to come here. My hope is that, through the Memo, we are able to foster the sense of community that makes Honors so special!

As an Honors student and the editor of the Memo, I get to find more examples of this wonderful family, and share them with you! It’s an incredible honor to introduce myself to you all. I’m excited to see and be a part of all of the wonderful ways that the Memo is able to create and build community.

Kind regards,
Kistler Hunt

In the Honors Spotlight

Honors first-year student Dalton Nagy plants roots in the Honors College

Photo features Dalton Nagy planting his flower bulbs on November 1, 2021. Photo submitted.

Dalton Nagy, Honors first year student majoring in business management, planted 444 bulbs in the Honors College Bailey last semester in November of 2021. Inspired and motivated by his time spent in the Bailey, Nagy decided to plant flowers to improve the space. He recognized that the beautification of the shared space would be a “great way to benefit my fellow honors students.” As a first-year student in the Honors College, Nagy has been able to plant his own roots in the Honors College through academics and community. He described, “The Honors College has been a great community to be brought into with the start of college. I got nothing but support from my friends and peers on this project and that was so rewarding!”
