edited by Kistler Hunt

May 4, 2022

Dear Honors College students, faculty, staff, friends, parents, and supporters!

Our Spring 2022 Honors College graduation ceremony will take place tomorrow, May 5, face-to-face in Appalachian's Blue Ridge Ballroom. As dean, I have the privilege of individually celebrating each student who has successfully completed all requirements of the Honors College and is therefore graduating with "University Honors."

Individually celebrating? I get to introduce each student, speak for a couple of minutes about some of their extraordinary accomplishments at Appalachian and in the Honors College, and present them with an Honors College medal, with our lasting gratitude for all of their ordinary and extraordinary contributions, and with a promise: that we in the Honors College and at Appalachian will continue to support them for as long as they need us!

What a privilege it is to work on behalf of Appalachian's students!

Jeff

Faculty may only apply for $1,000 per semester cycle and may reapply with the same student or a new student (but not both) for continued URA funding (not to exceed a total of $2,000). The URA program is open to all disciplines at Appalachian State. The deadline to apply to be a URA is May 13. For more information about being a URA, click here

Fellows will live in the residence hall with the scholars and provide support around college life. Fellows have the opportunity to be awarded between $2,500 and $4,000. For more information, contact Dr. Susan Hedges.

Julia Klass ’20 finds new insights in chateau restoration

Photo features Julia Klass in the town of Blois, the town closest to the chateau she’s working on in the Loire Valley. Photo submitted.

Julia Klass ‘20 has spent the last month in the Loire Valley of France. During her time in France, she has been living and working inside a chateau, gradually repairing it. Klass was inspired to go into this chateau restoration project after hearing about the program Workaway that provides food and housing in exchange for work. Throughout Klass’ time in France, she has learned more about the chateau’s history and the Loire Valley in general. Klass remarked, “I really love discovering the personality of the chateau day by day. It feels like a living thing sometimes… There is an insane amount of history here.”

Read more about Klass’ work here.
