Dear Honors students and friends of Honors,

Today’s memo details some fantastic opportunities. Whether representing the Honors College and working with incoming students as a Student Orientation Undergraduate Leader (SOUL), participating in a foreign exchange program in Germany, or learning about community engagement and fellowship through the annual Community Food Engagement and Story Telling (FEaST)—each are ways to engage, grow, and expand. This Memo also includes the opportunity to serve as an associate editor for the National Collegiate Honors Council’s (NCHC) Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (UReCA), in which Elliot Sheehan and I have the incredible honor of participating. The Honors College offers connections to opportunities. Use the Honors Wednesday Memo as a way to explore your passions and find your niche during your time here at Appalachian. I hope that you’re able to find that opportunity that you want to pursue, just as Elliot and I have. You never know what will happen!

Kind regards,

Kistler

Honors College juniors Kistler Hunt and Elliot Sheehan have been selected and are now serving on the editorial team for the National Collegiate Honors Council’s (NCHC) Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (UReCA). Both have prior editorial experience. Hunt has served as the editor of the Honors Wednesday Memo since January of 2022. For the 2022-23 academic year, Sheehan served as assistant editor for History Matters, the undergraduate research journal sponsored by the Department of History. Both Hunt and Sheehan are currently serving as associate editors for UReCA, reviewing student submissions to the journal. After reviewing the submissions, they score the articles, offer suggested edits for improving the work, and make recommendations as to whether the work is publishable or not. Hunt stated that “I highly encourage other Honors students to pursue this opportunity!” In addition, Sheehan encourages all Honors students to submit your work to UReCA. He shared, “Absolutely consider submitting your work to UReCA. We accept not only traditional research papers, but also creative works, and you can have the opportunity to be a published author and be able to market that as well as your research skills to future employers or schools. UReCA will put out a call for editor applicants in the spring, so also consider joining our bright and talented team.”
