Midwifery in the Mountains: Lisa Goldstein’s Care of Appalachian Women and Their Families in Western North Carolina

Social and professional friction concerning female health workers has existed for centuries, particularly for issues concerning birth. Debate about the proper roles and responsibilities for lay midwives, certified midwives, certified nurse midwives and OB-GYN physicians is intense and ongoing. The laws and policies in most health care institutions in the United States today favor the authority of physicians over all the other health care professionals.

Primary and Secondary Educational Changes During the Third Reich

The Nazi Party gained control of Germany in 1933, and used the education system as a way to disseminate Nazi ideology and indoctrinate a new generation of Germans into National Socialism.  Several specific tactics were used in the Nazi pursuit of shaping a generation.  Textbooks were rewritten to emphasize German accomplishments and devalue other groups, such as Jews, Bolsheviks, and Slavs.

The Impact of Foreign Relations on Chinese Consumerism

This research was conducted in order to explain the impacts of foreign relations on Chinese consumerism in today's society. By looking at China's economic and foreign relations background, participants in this study were surveyed and interviewed to try to develop a correlation between past historical events and current purchasing behavior. Marketing topics such as the country of origin effect and brand loyalty are discussed and applied to this research. The results of this study proved that there is a slight impact on foreign relations on current consumer behavior in China.

Irish Traditional Music: A Lecture-Recital of Representative Forms and Styles Performed on the Irish Flute

This written component serves as an academic addition to a lecture-recital that was given on April 19, 2013. It includes a brief history of the Irish flute, regional styles, descriptions of the tune types, and descriptions of my reasoning for choosing the repertoire that was on the recital. I reflect on how this impacted my identity as a person of Irish decent and a classically trained flutist. Additionally, I describe Irish ornamentation and how it feels different to play the Irish flute than the Boehm system silver flute.

Effects of Environmental Enrichment Upon the Amygdalae of Adolescent Rats

The effect of a history of environmental enrichment (EE) and acute exposures to EE on neuronal activation in basolateral amygdala (BLA) of young Long-Evans rats was examined. c-fos, an immediate early gene (IEG), was used to measure active neurons in the BLA. Specifically, the c-fos protein, which is the product of the c-fos IEG that is upregulated when neurons become active, was used as a marker of neuronal activation in this study.

Is Clicker Training More Effective Than Verbal Cues With Shelter Dogs?

Wood (2009) reported behavior acquisition occurred in significantly fewer minutes when training with a clicker rather than a verbal cue for shelter dogs.  This thesis replicated Wood (2009) by comparing the acquisition of the same response by shelter dogs when using a clicker or verbal conditioning.  Sixteen dogs (Canis lupus familiaris) were chosen for the study.  These dogs were selected from the Watauga Humane Society (WHS) through the assistance of WHS staff and a professional clicker-trainer.  The 16 subjects were divided into two groups, clicker and verba

How Patterns of Eye Contact Unfold Over Time: An Eye Tracking Study

This thesis examines typical adults' patterns of eye contact while they view faces. Autism spectrum disorder and social perception are discussed. Typically developing adults spend more time making eye contact in comparison to individuals with Autism spectrum disorder. My goal is to look at this question in a more naturalistic-dynamic situation. In this phase of the research, data of how typically developing adults view faces was collected.

Hyporheic Exchange and Nutrient Uptake in a Forested Urban Stream

Hyporheic exchange (HE) controls stream water quality by regulating biogeochemical processes, ecosystem functioning, and nutrient dynamics. The objective of this study was to better understand and quantify the extent of urban impact on HE and how that affects stream nutrient uptake. Hyporheic exchange and nutrient uptake were studied through tracer injection experiments in an urban stream, Boone Creek, and a forested stream, Winkler Creek.

Factors That Impact Job Placement for Finance and Banking Undergraduates

My undergraduate thesis involves collecting data, forming hypotheses, conducting univariate and regression analysis, and analyzing results to determine the factors that impact job placement for Finance and Banking majors in today's employment market. Variables that I test include, for example, GPA, club/organization involvement, when students begin their job search, internship, and others. The most statistically significant factors shown in my research are club involvement and students starting their job search early.
