The Dr. Dane Ward Endowed Honors Research Scholarship honors the great life and work of our colleague and friend Dr. Dane Ward, former dean of University Libraries at Appalachian, by providing approximately $750 in support to an Appalachian Honors College student conducting an exceptional undergraduate research project. Preferred projects include those seeking to make a substantial impact by increasing awareness, access to information, or direct support for a community of vulnerable people, with the potential of impacting the world and humanity! Note: “Research” includes scholarship and creative activity.

The scholarship will be added to the awardee’s App State student account, first covering any outstanding balances. Remaining funds will be refunded to the student. We request that awardees use these refunds to support their research projects by purchasing supplies and equipment, funding the collection and use of data and materials, meeting technology needs, or funding travel to conferences to present their research findings.

We look forward to awarding this scholarship in support of great research, scholarship, and/or creative activity, and in honor of, and lasting tribute to, Dr. Dane Ward.

Timeline

Applications for the George Williams Garrett Memorial Scholarship will open on October 1  and must be submitted by 11:55 pm on November 1. We anticipate notifying awardees by December 1.

Application process

As part of the application, you will be asked to respond to the following prompt: Writing for an audience of educated non-experts, as if you were writing for a news magazine, in at most 500 words, describe the purpose and importance of your project, relating the project’s objectives and design to that purpose. This scholarship prefers projects that can make a substantial impact by increasing awareness, access to information, or direct support for a community of vulnerable people, with the potential of impacting the world and humanity. If possible, your essay should explain how this project can make such an impact. We encourage you to work with your research mentor to review and refine your response to this prompt before you complete the full application.
