Regulation of the Organic Cation Transporters in Caenorhaditis Elegans Chemistry Jennifer Perry Cecile

In order for a cell to survive, molecules are transported across the selectively permeable membrane. The cell can do this by simple diffusion or with a transport protein. OCTs are membrane transporters that export a variety of positively charged xenobiotics out of epithelia organs such as the liver or kidney. Organic cations include endogenous compounds such as some neurotransmitters and coenzymes, but also drugs and xenobiotics.

Beetroot Juice Dietary Nitrate Supplementation and Hypoxic Aerobic Exercise Performance

Previous research has demonstrated that beetroot juice dietary nitrate supplementation has a beneficial effect on aerobic exercise at sea level.  This study applied this principle to a hypoxic cycling environment.

Objectifying Statements, Media Frames, and Cover Images: A Comparison of Men’s Health and Women’s Health Magazines

This research is a content analysis of the covers of Men’s Health and Women’s Health magazines from 2006 to 2011 with the purpose of analyzing and comparing the information found on the covers through the lens of Objectification theory and Framing theory. Three types of information were assessed by four coders. First, the prominent caption of each magazine was categorized for type of frame; appearance, body competence, health, weight loss, or other/miscellaneous. Second, the number of body parts stated in captions were counted.

The Impact of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act on Community Banks

In response to the financial crisis of the late-2000s, the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act was signed into federal law on July 21, 2010. The Act seeks to protect consumers and restore their confidence in financial institutions by preventing many of the problems that led to the Great Recession from happening again and by limiting the systemic risk of the so-called "too big to fail" banks.

The Assessment of the Speech and Language of Spanish-English Speaking Children

According to the 2010 U.S. Census Bureau, there are 8.5 million children enrolled in the school system who speak Spanish in their home, thousands of whom speak little to no English before kindergarten. This diverse population has continually increased throughout the past years, and with this growth, speech-language pathologists (SLPs) have been faced with the challenge of assessing the speech and language of these children.

The Progressive Party Campaign of 1948

The Progressive Party campaign of 1948 was launched in response to African-American’s lack of civil rights, governmental persecution of the Communist Party, and America’s militaristic, interventionist foreign policy following World War II.  The Progressive Party called for peace and understanding with the Soviet Union, the strengthening of the United Nations and international law, universal health care, and federal laws banning discrimination and Jim Crow.  They were led by Henry Wallace, who had been Secretary of Agriculture from 1933 to 1941, Vice President from 194

Breastfeeding and Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1

Mother to Child Transmission (MTCT) is a form of HIV-1 transmission that can occur through pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding. Many resource-rich countries have virtually eliminated this form of transmission, but in many resource-poor countries MTCT is still common. Most children under the age of ten become infected through this means of transmission. In this research review, many different studies and sources have been examined to answer these questions: does breastfeeding transmit HIV-1, should mothers who are HIV-positive breastfeed, and how can more cases of MTCT be prevented?

Elderly Latinos In North Carolina: Accessing Health Care Agencies Responses to the Growing Elderly Latino Population

The elderly Latino population in the United States is growing at an increasing rate.  As a result of this, a large number of these individuals are entering senior health care agencies.  The purpose of this study was to conduct a content analysis of senior health care agencies through website analysis, surveys, and phone interviews in three counties within North Carolina.  Overall, the results suggest that these elderly health care agencies are not prepared for the increase in population and have not made any adjustments to their facilities.

Nineteenth Century Guatemalan Public Health and the Indigenous Population

The aim of the thesis "Nineteenth Century Guatemalan Public Health and the Indigenous Population" is to answer whether or not public health existed in nineteenth century Guatemala and if so, to what extent. As the vast majority of the Guatemalan population was (and is) indigenous, the thesis concentrates on the indigenous experience related to public health. The historical analysis focuses on two distinct liberal regimes that ruled at the beginning and end of the nineteenth century.

Development of Sensing Systems to Monitor the Hydrolysis of β-Lactam Antibiotics

The problem of resistance to β-lactam antibiotics has become widespread. When the antibiotics were first developed, most strains of bacteria were susceptible, but, due to over- prescription, many strains today have developed resistance. The aim of this project is to create sensing systems to monitor the hydrolysis of β-lactam antibiotics. These systems will utilize β-lactamase, a gene responsible for antibiotic resistance, and enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP), a pH sensitive fluorescent protein.
